In celebration of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo), the Port Management Office (PMO) of Agusan spearheaded the International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) today, September 21, 2024, at the beachfront of Masao Port, Barangay Lumbocan, Butuan City. The event, part of a global initiative to combat marine pollution, brought together around 150 participants from various sectors, including PMO Agusan personnel, PCG Masao and Butuan units, City Government of Butuan, Brgy. Lumbocan Officials, employees from Concord Arrastre and Stevedoring Corp. (CASCOR), and representatives from DENR Region XIII, CENRO, Toyota Butuan, and other government agencies.
The clean-up resulted in the collection of 198kg of non-biodegradable waste, including plastic bottles and household debris. Seventeen bags of trash were gathered from the coastal area, marking a significant effort towards environmental preservation.
As part of the event’s Maritime Week kick-off, vessels at berth in the Ports of Masao and Nasipit simultaneously sounded their horns, adding a symbolic touch to the occasion.
This activity is in line with Executive Order No. 14, series of 2004, which designates the third Saturday of September as International Coastal Clean-Up Day. The initiative highlights the importance of preventing plastic waste and other pollutants from entering the ocean, demonstrating a unified commitment among government, civil society, and the private sector to protect marine ecosystems, combat climate change, and reduce plastic pollution.
