At 2:11 PM today, September 4, 2024, the MV RPS Explorer, a research vessel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB), arrived at the Port of Masao in Barangay Lumbocan, Butuan City. The vessel, carrying 17 marine crew members and 14 officers from the MGB Central Office, is conducting geological and mineral exploration activities in the Leyte-Panaon-Butuan offshore areas.
The ongoing study aims to assess the economic potential of these marine zones, with a particular focus on identifying and analyzing the occurrence, concentration, and genesis of mineral resources. The research will cover polymetallic sulfides, placer mineral deposits, including gold, platinum, titanium, iron, rare earth elements, and ferromanganese nodules.
Mr. Crisostomo V. Masangkay, Senior Geologist and Team Leader of the expedition, stated that the vessel will stay at the port for two days. This stop marks the final phase of their exploration, following the completion of surveys in the offshore areas of Leyte and Surigao provinces.
